A new season. A cosier way of living.
There’s something about the arrival of September that makes us look at home a little differently.
After months of open windows, garden doors, holidays, lighter evenings and living as much outside as in, autumn brings with it a natural shift. The days soften, evenings draw in and suddenly home becomes somewhere we want to retreat to again.
And we love it.
For us, the beginning of autumn is the perfect time for a gentle reset. Not a complete redecoration or dramatic seasonal makeover, but a few thoughtful changes that make home feel warmer, calmer and altogether more inviting.
Think softer lighting, natural textures, earthy ceramics, rich greens, warm amber tones and those little seasonal rituals that make coming home feel particularly lovely.
Here are our 10 simple ways to make home feel cosier this autumn.
1. Start with a post-summer reset
Before adding anything new, have a little edit.
Put away the things that feel distinctly summery, clear the surfaces that have accumulated the inevitable clutter of busy summer days and look at each room with fresh eyes.
Move a chair. Restyle a shelf. Change what's sitting on the kitchen table. Bring favourite pieces back out of cupboards.
You don't need to change everything. Sometimes simply creating a little breathing space is enough to make home feel refreshed for the season ahead.
2. Turn down the big light

If there is one instant route to a cosier home, it's lighting.
As daylight begins to disappear earlier, resist switching on every overhead light. Instead, create smaller pools of warm light around the room with table lamps, cordless lamps, lanterns and candles.
A little lamp on a kitchen worktop, bookshelf or side table can completely change the atmosphere of a room — particularly in those corners where a cable has always made a lamp impossible.
The aim is a soft glow rather than a floodlight. Autumn is no place for interrogation-room lighting.
3. Bring in warmer colours

You don't need to repaint a room to embrace an autumn palette.
Introducing just a few deeper, warmer shades can subtly change how a space feels. This season we're particularly drawn to rich leafy greens, warm amber and burnt orange, softened with earthy browns and natural neutrals.
Amber glass catches candlelight beautifully, while green works particularly well because it bridges the gap between the garden outside and the changing season indoors.
Choose a palette you love and repeat it in small doses throughout the room rather than trying to make everything match.
4. Layer natural textures

Cosiness isn't only about colour — it's about how a room feels.
Woven baskets, bamboo, natural wood, tactile ceramics, ribbed glass and organic shapes all add warmth and interest without making a room feel overly styled.

Try mixing rather than matching. A beautifully imperfect ceramic bowl beside smooth glass, or a woven basket next to a favourite armchair, instantly makes a space feel more relaxed and lived in.
It's those layers that give a home character.
5. Light the candles — even when there's no occasion
Don't save the good candles.
Lighting a candle at the end of the day is one of those tiny rituals that signals the transition from work to home, particularly as autumn arrives.

Place tealights and candle holders at different heights around a room, add dinner candles to the kitchen or dining table and let the flicker of candlelight become part of everyday evenings rather than something reserved for entertaining.
And if you're cooking beans on toast rather than hosting a dinner party? Light them anyway.
6. Bring a little of the outside in

As the garden begins to change, bring some of that seasonal beauty indoors.
A few branches gathered into a generous vase, autumn foliage, grasses, berries or a beautiful bunch of seasonal flowers immediately connects the house to what's happening outside.
At this time of year we love the slightly wilder ingredients — dahlias, crocosmia, berries, seed heads, grasses and textural foliage.
Nothing needs to be too perfect. In fact, autumn looks particularly lovely when it's a little unruly.
7. Add a playful nod to the season
Yes, we're talking pumpkins.
Autumn styling doesn't have to mean transforming your home into a Halloween grotto. A few carefully placed pumpkins and gourds are enough to acknowledge the season without overwhelming everything else.
Gather different sizes and shapes together on a kitchen table, add one or two amongst books and favourite objects on a shelf, or style them with foliage, candles and ceramics.
The more unusual and imperfect, the better.
8. Restyle the places you naturally gather
As summer ends, life begins moving back around the kitchen table, dining room and sitting room.
Give those spaces a little attention.
A large bowl on the table filled with seasonal fruit, a tray holding candles and favourite objects, a basket beside the sofa or a vase of flowers where everyone gathers can subtly make a room feel more welcoming.
Rather than styling every corner of the house, concentrate on the places you actually spend your time.
9. Create an autumn corner
One of our favourite tricks is to choose just one small area and make it feel wonderful.
It might be an armchair with a lamp and a pile of books, a console table with flowers and candlelight, or a little corner of the kitchen with a lamp, ceramic bowl and seasonal foliage.
Creating one beautifully considered spot can change the feeling of an entire room — and is far less daunting than attempting an autumn makeover from top to bottom.
10. Embrace the rituals of staying in
Ultimately, making home feel cosy isn't really about what we buy or how we decorate it. It's about how we live in it.
Cook something slowly. Put flowers on the table on an ordinary Tuesday. Light the candles. Invite friends over for supper. Find the book you've been meaning to read. Turn the lamps on before dusk and put the kettle on.
Autumn gives us permission to slow things down a little and rediscover the pleasure of being at home.
And perhaps that's the real art of autumn living.
